Here's A Fun Halloween Activity For Children - Wild Spiders
This is one of my preferred Halloween crafts for kids. It is swift and easy, can be accomplished with a crowd if necessary, and is an excellent method to practice cutting and fine motor skills with younger kids. Older children can allow their imaginations take over and create some very wacky Halloween spiders!
You will need:
Black construction paper
Scissors
Glue or sticky-tape
Cartoon eyes (optional) or scraps of paper and pens
Instructions:
Cut out a rectangle of paper approximately 3 inches by 3 1/2 inches. Fold over the short side over approximately an inch to make a pleat, then open it up again.
Turn the paper so that the fold is horizontal, then cut the paper in 7 organized lines up to the fold to create the 8 spider's legs. For younger children, sketch in the lines for them to repeat cutting on. With older kids, show them how to make the first cut at the middle, dividing the space under the crease into two halves. Then show them how to separate each half again to make quarters, and then the quarters to fashion eighths. There is no requirement be too accurate.
Now place the spider around the child's finger and fasten using sticky-tape or glue. Take off the spider again and trim - either with scraps of paper or with googly eyes. Place the spider back on the finger and curve the legs into shape or perhaps curl them around a pencil.
Some different ideas:
Suspend the spiders! Simply cut a length of black yarn (wool) and fasten inside the head of the spider using a small bit of sticky-tape.
Make littler versions of these spiders to decorate the ends of Halloween pencils.
Place small spiders around straws to brighten your Halloween table! Construct some larger spiders and scatter them around the table also.
Cut a small slit on both sides of the spider's head and put in a name card to turn these spiders into kooky place markers!
Once the body of the spider has been made but also before decorating, put a black pipe cleaner round the head of the spider to give a furry appearance. The protruding end of the pipe cleaner can be coiled into a hook shape, that will make the spider easier to suspend from shelving, the tops of doors, and other spooky locations! Stick googly eyes on the top of the pipe cleaner.
